Data Curation Function
At RCOS, we are developing a Data Curation Function, integrated with GakuNin RDM and JAIRO Cloud, to promote the reuse of research data. This function will support the entire process, from the collection and organization of research data to its publication, helping researchers assign appropriate metadata from the early stages of their work. In particular, it provides input support for domain-specific descriptive elements, designs metadata schemas that ensure standardization and interoperability, and integrates with access control mechanisms to manage confidential information and privacy requirements.
Assigning Metadata to Data During Ongoing Research
When reusing data within a research group, it can become difficult to identify the characteristics of shared data over time. By establishing a system that automatically records and assigns metadata from the early stages of research, this function reduces the effort required by the data creator to describe the data while ensuring its reusability.
Assigning Metadata Aligned with the Research Field
For other researchers in the same field to reuse data, they may need metadata that reflects the research context and domain-specific information. This function allows the creation of domain-specific metadata and provides support for publishing it. It facilitates metadata descriptions based on domain-specific vocabularies and structures.
Setting Access Restrictions for Published Data
Some research data contains content that should not be openly shared. In fields such as medicine and the social sciences, data is not made publicly accessible to protect the privacy of study participants; instead, it is provided only to users who meet certain criteria. This type of controlled provision of research content is called restricted access or restricted sharing, and about half of the world's research data repositories support this type of content provision.
To accommodate data that includes sensitive or private information, JAIRO Cloud will provide a restricted access function, along with a mechanism to specify licenses and usage conditions and enable metadata assignment linked to access control.
Providing an Environment for Cross-Disciplinary Data Reuse
Interdisciplinary research projects require an environment where data from different research fields can be searched and used in an integrated manner. JAIRO Cloud is designed to ensure interoperability between the different metadata schemas of each field, enabling cross-disciplinary exploration of research themes.
